SCLEROTHERAPY:
Diminishing unsightly "Spider" Veins
By
Carter Aune, MD
Millions of women are bothered by unsightly spider veins — small clusters of red, blue or purple veins often on the thighs, calves and ankles. About half of all adult women are thought to have spider veins.
Many physicians treat spider veins with sclerotherapy, injecting the veins with a solution that causes them to collapse and fade from view. Sclerotherapy may also remedy related symptoms including aching, burning, swelling and night cramps.
WHAT ARE SPIDER VEINS?
Spider veins are small, thin veins close to skin's surface. Although these super-fine veins are connected with the larger venous systems, they are not an essential part of it.
Heredity, pregnancy, hormonal shifts, weight gain, prolonged sitting or standing and the use of certain medications can contribute to spider veins.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM SCLEROTHERAPY
Sclerotherapy will enhance your appearance, but it won't remove every spider vein. Veins will appear lighter after each session. Two or more sessions are usually needed.
Only visible veins are treated. Sclerotherapy does nothing to permanently alter the venous system or prevent new veins in the future.
RISKS RELATED TO TREATMENT
Although they can occur, serious medical complications are extremely rare when a qualified practitioner is involved. Risks include blood clots, severe inflammation, allergic reactions and small, permanent scars.
PLANNING YOUR TREATMENT
During your initial consultation your doctor will examine your legs and may sketch the affected areas. He'll also check for more serious “deep vein” problems indicated by swelling, sores or skin changes at the ankle. A hand-held Doppler ultrasound device may be used to detect other problems.
Problems with the larger veins must be treated first, or sclerotherapy of the surface veins will be unsuccessful.
When scheduling your procedure, keep in mind that your legs may be bruised or slightly discolored for some weeks afterward.
YOUR NEW LOOK
Most patients are quite pleased and surprised at the dramatic difference between treated and untreated legs. Their legs appear younger, cleaner and more healthy-looking. They no longer need to wear long skirts or slacks to hide their spider veins. If spider veins have been making your legs unsightly, call Sussex Family Practice for an appointment!
